Pop-Up Animation

This was an interesting one – create a map without it being a boring plain old map.

Like any good map it has to be detailed but the brief here was to create a map thats main objective is to demonstrate the location of the EICC in the centre of Edinburgh and it’s proximity to key locations that would entice potential EICC clients to book the venue. At the same time it had to illustrate the travel links that the EICC benefits from. Quite a lot of detail to get into an animation that’s only 29 seconds long. So we came up with the pop up technique which delivers a strong visual illustration of the various locations and forms of transport and then added the sweeping moves from one element of information to the next.

The overall effect is really engaging as well as having great energy – and geographically it’s pretty accurate too!

This piece is part of a project which the EICC commissioned us to produce over the course of a year.

3D Reconstruction

This 3d modelled animation was commissioned as part of a legal case and as such the detail within it is a precise visual reconstruction of an accident.

Working with the accident investigation experts, LA Media was supplied with a full accident report which contains an extensive account of the event, including witness and driver statements, photographs, analysis of the accident scene, weather conditions, road markings etc. This information is then built into a 3d reconstruction and different camera angles rendered to show various points of view. Everything down to the traffic lights sequence and the exact car models is accurate to the information supplied.

We’ve not included the actual point of contact but this clip demonstrates how much more effective a visual is when explaining a chain of events – much easier to understand than a 40+page document.

LA Media can create 3d modelled animations of just about anything you could conceive – architectural, marine, technology, engineering, event set ups. So, even if it doesn’t exist we can make it come to life!

We’re currently in production with some exciting new animations which we’ll post as soon as we can.

The thing about timelapse is it involves a bit of a mathematical equation in order to get going…..if you want your final timelapse film to have a duration of 1 minute and you’re filming activity over the course of 4 days how many frames should you shoot per day?……1 frame per second….1 frame every 30 seconds….oh the horror of stepping back in time to your 0-Grade maths exam…..Anyway, once you get over that bit it gets EXCITING as you chose your camera position and rig up all the kit and then it all gets a bit SLOW again as you wait…and wait….and, well you get the picture…..but it’s worth all the effort and the patience and the changing camera positions and the standing around just waiting because the end results are very compelling and have huge energy.

This particular piece was commissioned by Sky to use online to advertise their forthcoming Skyfest event. They wanted to build up a sense of anticipation and excitement around the event amongst their troops and in doing so sell tickets. Our client was delighted as the ticket uptake went stellar!

We shot this using our Canon EOS 550d with a wide angle lens. For timelapse projects that span over much longer periods we can monitor remotely, meaning the waiting can be done over a nice cup of tea in our lovely edit suite!

So, in summary, the equation you need to get going is:
maths + shot position x waiting = lovely timelapse
