The client on this job came to us with a whole load of material which had been shot all over the world – fabulous stuff and really fascinating.  Our job was to archive this extensive library of shots and cherry pick the real stoaters to make a short film which could be used online or as a back drop at conferences and events.

It can be a tricky job pulling together material acquired over a long period of time, covering such a diverse range of detail into a cohesive piece.  In order to do deliver an effective film we came up with a treatment integrating 3d map animations to convey the scale of the companys’ operations as well as an animating text technique to tell the story within that.  A big part of Cairn’s ethos is “Discovering Hidden Value” – the animating text graphic wipe technique allows us to use text statements to tell the story and at the same time reveal the layer hidden underneath.

We also devised a tasty editing technique to deliver interesting round-ups of each section as well as maintaining a good energy throughout.

The music for this film was produced and composed in-house too – we really wanted a sound that would compliment the images so we hunted out some unusual instruments to give the track a world music vibe.

Good stuff and great fun to work on.

The thing about timelapse is it involves a bit of a mathematical equation in order to get going…..if you want your final timelapse film to have a duration of 1 minute and you’re filming activity over the course of 4 days how many frames should you shoot per day?……1 frame per second….1 frame every 30 seconds….oh the horror of stepping back in time to your 0-Grade maths exam…..Anyway, once you get over that bit it gets EXCITING as you chose your camera position and rig up all the kit and then it all gets a bit SLOW again as you wait…and wait….and, well you get the picture…..but it’s worth all the effort and the patience and the changing camera positions and the standing around just waiting because the end results are very compelling and have huge energy.

This particular piece was commissioned by Sky to use online to advertise their forthcoming Skyfest event. They wanted to build up a sense of anticipation and excitement around the event amongst their troops and in doing so sell tickets. Our client was delighted as the ticket uptake went stellar!

We shot this using our Canon EOS 550d with a wide angle lens. For timelapse projects that span over much longer periods we can monitor remotely, meaning the waiting can be done over a nice cup of tea in our lovely edit suite!

So, in summary, the equation you need to get going is:
maths + shot position x waiting = lovely timelapse

Sky Sizzler

This is the first ‘sizzler’ we’ve edited for Sky and great fun it was too.

The client brief was to ensure that Sky employees watching it would feel proud to work for the company – “Get the hairs on the back of their heads standing up” he demanded!

We edited this HD project fully uncompressed in house at LA Media and titivated it with some Super Slow-Mo effects…..look out for more of these Super Slo-Mo effects shots – we’ll be posting them soon!

There was a distinct frisson of anticipation at LA Media when this job landed – to film Sir Jackie Stewart and fast cars…..The first part of the day was spent in Glasgow at the press launch, which was fittingly held at the newly refurbished RAC building in Blythswood Square.

Then we zoomed over to Knockhill to film the rally drivers and the legend Sir Jackie who was tearing up the track.  Rally cars are incredibly fast, noisy and completely and utterly thrilling – go see, the rally is taking place on 19-21 November , more info:  http://www.eventscotland.org/press/27

The post production was done in house at LA Media including all the colour grading, filtering and effects, original music and sound FX.

…..now off to pop some stickers & a go faster fin on my 1.3 litre fiesta and tear it up Leith Walk through the trams works…..

This short film was made to advertise a hockey event which is being held in Edinburgh in 2011…..apparently to qualify as a ‘Golden Oldie’ you only have to be 35!  This is aimed attracting hockey lovers from as far afield as New Zealand & Australia, to come to Edinburgh & take part in not only the sport but also to enjoy everything else the city has to offer.

The guys from the Scottish Hockey team had all the moves & this was great fun to film & edit.  We used a lot of motion control & graded the shots to get some great effects.  We also composed & produced the music in-house – the piece gives us a good fast cutting pace which works really well with sport.

Still feeling slightly raw that age 35 is considered ‘Oldie’ though!

In between filming ourselves in the kitchen & being very busy media people, we also find the time to compose & produce original music.  This is a link to a preview of our recent commission from STV for their new 3 episode flagship factual programme, ‘Scotland Revealed’:

The brief was to compose a piece of music that would match the splendour of Scotland’s stunning scenery, filmed from the air.  After viewing the rough cut we knew we’d have to go full orchestral in order to do justice to Scotland in all it’s glory!  We just loved working on this – it raised the roof & made us especially proud to be Scottish!

For a sneaky preview check out the link – or better still watch it on STV Thursday 17 September at 9pm!

Some Nonsense

Some more time lapse nonsense – just to amuse ourselves!

We did shoot a time lapse for a client over the course of the weekend – an event build at the EICC.  We got the build from different angles and adjusted frame rates over the course of the 2 days to ensure sure we covered the scale of the build as effectively as possible.

Look out for the results will feature on the EICC website.
